Ibrahim Alfa Jnr
Infinite Black Inside LP
Ibrahim Alfa Jr is now in his 40s but has been making techno since his late teens, started piano aged seven and played bass in school bands, so he has soaked up many different scenes from Chicago house to John Cage minimalism. His new album Infinite Black Inside channels a period of illness and sobriety into dense, bass-heavy sketches that feel both impulsive and sharply detailed. 'Subutrax' flickers between footwork and Detroit techno while 'Naked Lunchbreak' drives forward on live drums and hazy keys. Elsewhere, 'Drum Slinger' and 'Capture' fold jazz, dub and broken beat into unstable forms. It is raw but purposeful, mapping survival through sound and refusing to settle into any single identity, as he has done all his life.
